AdministrationThe House of Amos, Inc., is governed by a Chairman of the Board and the Board of Directors. An Executive Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the House of Amos and supervises other staff members and volunteers.HistoryThe House of Amos, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, was founded in July 1996 by Mike Kutka, an Alief resident and area businessman. Mary Kutka, M.P.H., served as the volunteer Executive Director from the inception until February 2003. She is still very active with the Houston READ Commission and the ESL program. The name refers to the prophet Amos, who lived in the 8th. century B.C.E. He prophesied to the complacent Israelites condemning their corrupt moral and social conduct and their treatment of the poor and the needy. Amos called for a reversal of social injustice. |
