Service Area


The House of Amos does not limit services to specific geographical areas. Anyone living in the Houston area who is need of assistance is welcome.

Emergency Food Pantry


The House of Amos is a member of the Houston Food Bank. Food is also provided by the Alief ISD school food drives, private donations from individuals, regular contributions from Whole Foods Markets, Kroger and Randalls. Clients are eligible to access the food pantry once a month and more often in emergencies.

Saturday Brown Bag Lunch


The Soup Mobile from Memorial Drive United Methodist Church delivers lunches every Saturday of the year. Families coming to the House of Amos on the weekend are provided a brown bag lunch for each child. Since 70.78% of the children in AISD qualified for the federal free or reduced lunch program in 2006-2007, the House of Amos' weekend sack lunch program meets a very real need.

Summer Lunch Program


The House of Amos is an approved site for the Houston Parks & Recreation's Summer Lunch Program. Any child one year of age to eighteen is eligible to eat a nutritious box lunch on the premises. Lunches are served from 11 am to 1 pm, Monday-Friday, during the months of June, July and the first two weeks of August.

FREE Immunizations - Birth to 18 years


The Care Van is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas under the direction of the Caring for Children Foundation of Texas, Inc.

The medical supplies for the Care Van 2007 were provided by The Methodist Hospital.

Parent or guardian MUST accompany the child and MUST bring the child's immunization records. Vaccines are given free to any infant or child up to the age of 18.

Referral Services


Services are provided at no cost to clients. Referral services include help in locating GED programs, skill training programs, WIC medical clinics, Gold Card, CHIP, Medicaid and financial assistance programs. The House of Amos offers no financial assistance.

GED Classes


GED classes are on hold as of Summer of 2007.

ESL Classes– English as a Second Language


Involvement with the Houston READ Commission has resulted in a commitment to English as a Second Language classes in order to prepare our clients to communicate more effectively and to find employment more easily. Classes taught by certified ESL instructors are offered Monday through Thursday in the mornings and evenings.

English Language (EL) Civics instruction began in the Summer of 2007.
